Overclocking

Overclocking is the process of running a computer component at a higher clock rate (more clock cycles per second) than it was designed for or was specified by the manufacturer, usually practiced by enthusiasts seeking an increase in the performance of their computers. Some purchase low-end computer components which they then overclock to higher clock rates, or overclock high-end components to attain levels of performance beyond the specified values. Others overclock outdated components to keep pace with new system requirements, rather than purchasing new hardware.^[1]

People who overclock their components mainly focus their efforts on processors, video cards, motherboard chipsets, and RAM. It is done through manipulating the CPU multiplier and the motherboard's front-side bus (FSB) clock rate until a maximum stable operating frequency is reached, although with the introduction of Intel's new X58 chipset and the Core i7 processor, the front side bus has been replaced with the QPI (Quick Path Interconnect); often this is called the Baseclock (BCLK). While the idea is simple, variation in the electrical and physical characteristics of computing systems complicates the process. CPU multipliers, bus dividers, voltages, thermal loads, cooling techniques and several other factors such as individual semiconductor clock and thermal tolerances can affect it.^[2]

LM1881 is used to do all the grunt work of separating the sync signals from the composite video. The chip provides the vertical sync on pin 3 for the vertical oscillator, and composite sync on pin 1 for the horizontal oscillator. The intensity signal comes from the composite video signal itself, but is negative. I didn’t really mind since this circuit took only 10-15 minutes to slap together. If an inverter is preferred to make the video “positive” then here is a schematic for the inverter below as taken from the VGA-Scope converter. This circuit includes another 555 to generate the negative supply rail for the op-amps.

You'll only need a few components in order to make your own battery-powered USB charger. As with all builds involving electricity, you'll need some knowledge of electronics. This is needed as you don't want to fry your devices in the process. You'll need a basic 9V battery, so make sure that you have the right connectors. You'll need a female USB port that you can salvage off an old computer.

The positive lead from the battery goes to the regulator's left leg, and the regulated 5V goes from its right leg to the left pin of USB port. The ground wire goes from the battery to the middle leg of the regulator, then continues onto the right pin of the USB port. A glue gun will do wonders in sticking it into some kind of casing. It's quite compact and easy to carry around.

There are some inherent limitations, including the ones that are put in by the manufacturers of your devices, but this shouldn't discourage your from trying out this simple and effective way of charging up your gadgets by using a few dollars worth of equipment. Possible improvements include using a larger array of batteries, like 5 D batteries.
