434..Assigning a Static IP Address on a Wired Computer when Using Mac

Assigning a computer a static IP address allows the PC to use the same IP address every time. Configuring a Mac to automatically get an IP address will enable it to get an IP address from a DHCP server. Instead of manually entering the IP settings, which will take time, performing this procedure will ensure that the Mac will get the correct TCP/IP settings.

Assigning a Mac a static IP address is useful when:

  • Setting-up public services on the Mac (FTP servers, Web servers, etc.).
  • The Mac is frequently accessed on the network so that the Mac can be easily mapped

To assign a Mac a static IP address, you need to perform five steps:

  1. Connecting the Devices Together
  2. Checking If the Mac Is Set To DHCP
  3. Checking the Router’s IP Address
  4. Getting the DNS Servers From a Linksys Router
  5. Configuring a Static IP Address On the Ethernet Adapter

To begin assigning a Mac a static IP address, follow the steps below.

Connecting Devices Together

Ensure that you have an active Internet connection then connect the modem to the router’s Internet port and the Mac to any of the four Ethernet ports. For instructions, click here.

Checking if the Mac is Set to DHCP

To configure a Mac to get an IP address automatically, you have to check the TCP/IP properties of the Ethernet Adapter installed on the Mac. For instructions, click here.

Checking the Router’s IP Address

To find a Linksys router’s local IP address, you have to check the IP settings of the Mac. For instructions, click here.

Checking the DNS Servers From a Linksys Router

To check the DNS server on a Linksys router, you have to access the router’s web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.

Configuring a Static IP Address on the Mac's Ethernet Adapter

To assign a static IP address on the Ethernet adapter using Mac, follow the steps below.

NOTE: To assign a static IP address using Windows Vista, click here.

To assign a static IP address using Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP, click here.

Step 1:
Click the Apple menu  located at the upper right-hand corner of the screen, then select System Preferences.

NOTE: You may use other options to access System Preferences.

Step 2:
Under System Preferences click Network.

Step 3:
When the Network screen appears, look for Location and select Automatic then under Show select Built-in Ethernet.

Step 4:
Under Configure IPv4 select Manually and enter the following:

NOTE: Make sure you have the Default Gateway and DNS servers.

Make sure the IP address you’ll be assigning the Mac has the same first three numbers as the Default Gateway and the last number can be any number between 2 and 99. In this example, our Default Gateway is "192.168.1.1," so the IP address that should be used must start with 192.168.1. then place any number from 2 to 99. In this example, the IP address that we’ll assign is "192.168.1.50."

NOTE: For each additional Mac that will be assigned a static IP address, make sure it’s assigned a unique IP address.

  • IP address: “192.168.1.50”
  • Subnet mask: “255.255.255.0”
  • Default gateway: “192.168.1.1” (This is the Default Gateway you wrote down earlier)
  • DNS Servers: (this should be the DNS you wrote down earlier)

Step 5:

Click .
